Help to Move Campaign
We are facing a rapidly ageing population and need more suitable and specialist retirement housing provision in the UK.
Just as Help to Buy aims to accommodate the housing needs of first time buyers, Help to Move is campaigning to give you the housing choices you want and need in later life.
What we are calling for
Help to Move is calling for three main changes to policies that impact housing in the UK:
1. The suspension of Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) on purchases of specialist retirement community properties.
This way, moving and downsizing will be a more manageable process and you can better protect and retain your assets.
2. An increase in the availability of public funding for the construction of specialist retirement community properties in the affordable and social housing sector.
Retirement communities are socially and economically viable and we want the spectrum of choice to be as broad as possible, to accommodate people with varying needs and means.
3. Ensuring local authorities have a consistent approach to planning and approving retirement community schemes to ensure we are building sufficient homes for our ageing population.
The UK simply needs more homes. In order for older people to downsize homes and free up larger family properties, there must be more consideration of planning permission to allow these communities to be built.
As well as government policy aims, ARCO’s campaign is aimed at you. We want you to have the choice of where and how you live, as you get older. Because retirement communities operate on different models, it’s easy to find a site and circumstance that works for you.
