Who we are

The Associated Retirement Community Operators (ARCO) is the main body representing operators of older people’s housing-with-care schemes in the UK. Founded in 2012, we now have 29 members, who together make up 50% of the UK’s retirement community market.

Why attend

After the sell-out success of What Next 2016, this year’s conference will bring together the latest thinking from leading operators, thinkers and regulators. With great speakers and fantastic opportunities to network, this is the must-attend conference on retirement villages and extra care housing.

WHAT NEXT?

With housing, ageing and care high on the national agenda, retirement communities are more important than ever. This will be a formative year for the sector, with significant decisions due to be made which will shape the sector for years to come. Once again, the conference will analyse current developments, and consider how providers can harness opportunities, overcome challenges, and adapt to meet the needs of the next generation of older people.

Topics to be discussed at the 2017 conference include:

  • A formative year – for extra care housing? With a decision on the government’s LHA cap expected by the summer, how might this change the future of state-supported extra care?
  • A formative year – for government policy on older people’s housing? With the Housing White Paper committing to stimulate the market for older people’s housing and ‘housing with support’, is 2017 the year in which government policy finally recognises the importance of the retirement community sector?
  • A formative year – for event fees? With the Law Commission’s work on event fees entering its final stages, how will operators’ business models and practices adopt to accommodate the new legal framework?
  • A formative year – for new models of tenure? With new operators working on private rental models for the ‘older old’, will 2017 see innovation when it comes to looking at tenure models beyond leasehold, including those that retain an element of home ownership.

Spread over two days, the second day of the conference on 11 May involves a Knowledge Exchange Day giving delegates the chance to gain in-depth insight and engage in rigorous discussion through a range of workshops and tours.

Please note that the knowledge exchange workshops and study tours on 11 May 2017 will take place at Trowers and Hamlins, 3 Bunhill Row, EC1Y8YZ. Please see Location for more information.

ARCO allows me to hear and see first-hand what colleagues in the sector are doing, and to stay on top of new developments and concepts.

Jane Ashcroft, Chief Executive, Anchor

ARCO’s events are valuable for knowledge and focus on the challenges and opportunities our sector is facing – recognising the unique market rather than treating it simply as an extension of retirement housing or residential care.

Jeremy Walford, Managing Director, Middleton Hall Retirement Village

Finally there is an inclusive forum for all to learn, develop and promote the industry. Really enjoyable … well worth it.
