ARCO   2018 ARCO Annual Conference
4-5th July 2018

London, UK

Ending the Ambiguity

With housing, ageing and care high on the national agenda, retirement communities are more important than ever. Once again, the conference will analyse current developments, and consider how providers can harness opportunities, overcome challenges, and adapt to meet the needs of the next generation of older people.

Topics to be discussed at the 2018 main conference day on 4 July:

  • Learning from De Hogeweyk – from dementia villages to dealing with dementia in retirement villages? Eloy van Hal, founder of the internationally acclaimed dementia village De Hogeweyk in the Netherlands, will be joining us to discuss how the UK retirement community sector can incorporate aspects of leading edge dementia care.
  • Affordability, Pricing and Cracking the Middle Market Using original research on affordability levels of retirement housing in the UK, Ben Rosewall from CBRE will look at different pricing strategies to unlock demand for ‘middle market’ properties.
  • Building a (big) business: How Ryman Healthcare became New Zealand’s largest retirement village operator Debbie McClure will share the insight which has grown Ryman into a company with 31 retirement villages, 10,000 residents, 4,500 staff and a market capitalisation of more than £2.5billion.
  • What’s in a name? Forging a unique identity for the housing-with-care sector This session will look at options for a future label for the sector, drawing on market research and focus groups with residents.
  • Sleeping Giants? Are Housing Associations missing out on the demand for housing-with-care? An expert panel session will discuss the huge potential for housing associations to mak‎e an impact in the housing with care sector.

Spread over two days, the second day of the conference on 5 July involves a Knowledge Exchange Day giving delegates the chance to gain in-depth insight and engage in rigorous discussion through a range of workshops and tours.

We are immensely grateful to our sponsors for making ARCO's 2018 retirement community conference possible.

Who we are

The Associated Retirement Community Operators (ARCO) is the main body representing operators of older people’s housing-with-care schemes in the UK. Founded in 2012, we now have 29 members, who together make up 50% of the UK’s retirement community market.

Why attend

After the sell-out success of What Next 2017, this year’s conference will bring together the latest thinking from leading operators, thinkers and regulators. With great speakers and fantastic opportunities to network, this is the must-attend conference on retirement villages and extra care housing.

What we do

ARCO works to promote confidence in the sector; raise awareness of the housing-with-care model amongst older people and stakeholders; and increase the volume and quality of expertise in the sector through our extensive events programme.

Please note that the knowledge exchange day on 5 July 2018 will take place at Trowers and Hamlins, 3 Bunhill Row, EC1Y8YZ. Please see Location for more information.

ARCO allows me to hear and see first-hand what colleagues in the sector are doing, and to stay on top of new developments and concepts.

Jane Ashcroft, Chief Executive, Anchor

ARCO’s events are valuable for knowledge and focus on the challenges and opportunities our sector is facing – recognising the unique market rather than treating it simply as an extension of retirement housing or residential care.

Jeremy Walford, Managing Director, Middleton Hall Retirement Village

Fantastic opportunity for an introduction to an industry previously unknown to me.
