Join ARCO

ARCO would like to invite all providers of retirement communities to join the Association.

This page provides an overview of eligibility, the main benefits of membership and membership fees. You can also download our membership brochure for a brief overview.

Eligibility

OutsideIn order to be eligible for membership, organisations and companies need to be operating at least one retirement community (this may also be referred to as a retirement village; extra care housing; housing with care; assisted living; close care apartments; or independent living) in the UK that qualifies for ARCO membership.

The following list provides an overview of the criteria for ARCO membership for an individual scheme. Please note that ARCO schemes must meet all of the criteria, i.e., the answer to each of the questions below must be ‘yes’. Does the retirement community:

  • Offer housing primarily for older people?
  • Offer self-contained accommodation which can be purchased and/or rented with security of tenure?
  • Enable residents to take advantage of personal care that is delivered flexibly, usually by staff based on the premises?
  • Have staff available on the premises for 24 hours a day?
  • Have domestic services for residents available?
  • Have facilities for meals to be available in restaurants or dining areas?
  • Offer communal facilities and are managed to encourage an active social programme in the community?
  • Aim to be a home for life and to enable people to “age in place”?

In addition, ARCO-registered schemes must comply with the principles set out in ARCO’s Standards and Compliance Framework, including the central pillar of ARCO’s Consumer Code.

Membership options

There are two main options for ARCO membership for providers of retirement communities:

  • Full Membership
  • Full Membership with a small member reduction

The difference between these two types of membership is reflected both in the subscription fees and the benefits members are entitled to.

Full Membership

Full Members benefit from the following:

  • Eligibility to stand for election to the ARCO board at the AGM
  • Participation at the annual AGM, with voting rights in the election of Board members
  • Invitation to attend the ARCO Forum for free. The ARCO Forum is a twice yearly event at which ARCO members can network, and speakers and guest speakers provide an overview of sector developments.
  • Notes of the ARCO Forum, including copies of slides of the presentations given
  • Registration of all schemes with the ARCO Standard, including a membership certificate to be displayed in every registered scheme
  • Invitation to attend (or send representatives) to topical workshops organised throughout the year, free of charge
  • Access to ARCO marketing materials and participation in campaigns
  • Self-portrait on the ARCO website
  • Listing of a member’s schemes on the ARCO website

Membership fees for Full Membership are based on a fee of £10 per registered unit per year (plus VAT). For Full Members, there is a collar (i.e. minimum payment) of £5,000 (plus VAT) per year, and a cap (i.e. maximum payment) of £10,000 (plus VAT) per year. This means that even if fewer than 500 units are registered, Full Members will pay £5,000 (plus VAT) per year. If a member registers more than 1,000 units, membership is capped at £10,000 (plus VAT).

Full membership with small member reduction

Full Members who take up the small member reduction benefit from the following:

  • Participation at the annual AGM, with voting rights in the election of Board members
  • Access (for a fee) to the ARCO Forum
  • Notes of the ARCO Forum, including copies of slides of the presentations given
  • Registration of all schemes with the ARCO Standard, including a membership certificate to be displayed in every registered scheme
  • Self-portrait on the ARCO website
  • Access (for a fee) to topical workshop organised throughout the year
  • Listing of a member’s schemes on the ARCO website
  • Access to ARCO marketing materials and participation in campaigns

Membership fees for this category of membership are based on a fee of £10 per registered unit per year (plus VAT). The minimum subscription is £1,000 (plus VAT) per year, even if fewer than 100 units are registered.

Other joining options

Other options for connecting with ARCO include Prospective Membership and the ARCO Affiliate Network.

Prospective Membership

An organisation that is not currently operating an eligible retirement community but is in the process of building one can join ARCO as a Prospective Member. This incurs most of the same benefits as Full Members with the small member reduction above, except Prospective Members use a distinct ARCO logo, and do not receive certificates until after the scheme is built.

ARCO Affiliate Network

An organisation that does not operate an eligible retirement community (and is not building one), that works in the housing-with-care sector and would like to be involved with ARCO can join the ARCO Affiliate Network. Please see the ARCO Affiliate Network for further information.

Please contact ARCO’s Head of Operations Shandi Petersen at shandipetersen@arcouk.org or 020 36971204 if you would like to discuss any of the above options for joining ARCO.
